What is headlined today in the local newspaper TRIBUNE PEN is the UNDERHEIGHT BUT QUALIFIED COPS NEEDED.
Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Director General Alan LM Purisima has expressed his full support to the resolution of the National Police Commission (Napolcom) waiving age, height or weight limits for applicants in the police force. They may be short in height but they can be of service to the country.
Purisima added that said new rule would fill the recruitment quota needed to replace police officers who will retire at the age of 56 and to those who resigned or are dismissed from the service due to various reasons and other infractions.
Accordingly, PNP is allowed to recruit 15,000 new policemen every year but on the average, they only manage to recruit some 6,000 Police Officers I after a thorough screening.
PNP entrance exams is open to civilians who are holding a bachelor’s degree, under 30 years old, and at least 1.62 meters in height for male and 1.57 meters for female.

In most cases, recruits who excel in academics and pass the mental and physical tests are AUTOMATICALLY EXCLUDED from the list of applicants after they were found to be wanting in height.
Thus, Purisima said that these under-height but bright and deserving applicants should be granted a waiver so that they can enter the police organization and be of service to the country.
Said waiver does not mean lowering the recruitment standards. It will simply widen the pool of talented people from which the organization can select prospective police officers, Purisima added.
The memorandum on waiving the age, height or weight limits was signed by and between Napolcom Chairman and the Secretary of the Department of Interior and Local Government in the wake of a previous downward trend on police recruitment and a reduction in the number of successful applicants, many of them are under-height, under-weight or over-age.
Waiver shall be given to applicants who are 20 years old or but not over 35 years old.
Waiver in height may be granted on men who are at least 1.57 meters and women who are at least 1.52 meters.
The height requirement for indigenous groups shall be 1.52 meters for male and 1.45 meters for female.
For the weight waiver, applicants will be given six months in order to meet the weight requirement.
Applicants for waiver shall undergo the panel interview and they are required to showcase their special skills and talents before the Committee members and the consultants.
